Plaka is one of the most famous and traditional villages in Western Crete, in the region of Apokoronas. It is located 29 km from Chania, and belongs to the Municipality of Vamos together with the neighboring villages of Almyrida and Kalyves.

Contrary to these, Plaka is not located on the coast, but on a low hill and is less than 1 kilometer from the beach of Almyrida. Plaka is a very beautiful village built almost amphitheatrically, offering an excellent view of Almyrida, the blue Cretan Sea, the bay of Souda and the imposing White Mountains.

The village is verdant and largely preserves the beautiful natural environment, as it is located in slope of Mount Drapanokefala where the vegetation is intense and varied. You can see olive trees and even plane trees, low vegetation with bushes, but also organic farming facilities that have not altered the character of the area.

Plaka has about 400 permanent residents, half of whom are foreigners, mostly British. In general, it is a village particularly loved by foreigners both for holidays and for permanent residence. The village maintains its traditional character to a large extent. It has a beautiful central square where the interest of all visitors gathers, since this is the meeting point for locals and foreigners, in the cafes or coffee shops of the square.

The inhabitants of Plaka are busy with their farms and the production of olive oil and wine or tsikoudia in the area is particularly widespread. In the local shops and taverns of the area you will find very good local wine, not only to drink during your stay there, but also to take with you.
